Review: Cast in Shadows, or the beginning of a new adventure!

Happy Monday everyone! How are you feeling? Today it is my day off at work, and I was hoping to get a long day to just chill and relax, but it seems like I have to rethink it, because my to-do list yesterday suddenly grew. And it grew a lot! Adulting sucks! But at least today I am here with a new review, for a book that I loved, so let’s get started!

Title: Cast in Shadow
Series: Chronicles of Elantra #1
Author: Michelle Sagara
Page Count: 507

You can buy it here: Amazon

Seven years ago Kaylin fled the crime-riddled streets of Nightshade, knowing that something was after her. Children were being murdered — and all had the same odd markings that mysteriously appeared on her own skin…
Since then, she’s learned to read, she’s learned to fight and she’s become one of the vaunted Hawks who patrol and police the City of Elantra. Alongside the winged Aerians and immortal Barrani, she’s made a place for herself, far from the mean streets of her birth.
But children are once again dying, and a dark and familiar pattern is emerging, Kaylin is ordered back into Nightshade with a partner she knows she can’t trust, a Dragon lord for a companion and a device to contain her powers — powers that no other human has. Her task is simple — find the killer, stop the murders… and survive the attentions of those who claim to be her allies!

In February I was very good with my ongoing series but I have also started something new. But hey! I had this series on my TBR since forever, it was one of the first books I have added to my Goodreads ‘ TBR and it was patiently waiting for its turn.
And then I just read a great review of it so… Yep, I am a weak bookworm and I simply couldn’t resist its call anymore.

But I regret nothing! Nothing!

It was such a great reading! Captivating from the beginning, with complex worldbuilding and amazing characters! The world of Elantra is populated by so many different races, and they all are original and fascinating. The worldbuilding doesn’t go much in-depth, but this is quite typical of this genre, and I am looking forward to the sequels to know more about it.
But as first books went, this one was very good. And fascinating! So many new races to discover and so many places to explore. I cannot way! (And it really is a good thing that I am trying to concentrate on the series this month, too, so maybe I won’t have to wait a lot before continuing it!).
Ah, and we have dragons too! But this is not all.

We have a good story, full of actions and mysteries. And since the big mystery is linked to our main characters and her mysterious and painful past, we get to know her background too. I was enthralled by the story and the sass that we can find in these pages, and I couldn’t get enough. I simply couldn’t stop reading and putting down the book was bad. I needed more, and I needed to know what was happening so… Putting it down was really, really bad.

Sometimes we deserve for life to stop and just let us read a book in one sitting!

And I have left the best part for last. The characters! Kaylin is a strong and determined young woman who grew quite a lot in this book. She is not the best character ever, because she has the habit to try and carry the weight of the world on her shoulders, and I am not a fan of this kind of characters, but she is good and the author manages to make her real. She is always late, always. And she has a good heart. And I liked her all the same. Yes, she is not my favorite, but I like her anyway. And then we have Severn, Nightshade, Markus and all the others. Severn, Nightshade, and Tiamaris are major characters too and I loved them all.
I know I am a shallow person, but I liked Severn from the start. And I know he is not exactly good news but I couldn’t help myself. He is bad and broody, with a dark past, and yes, he is quite stereotyped but who cares! He is so real, too, and complex, and see he barters with Kaylin was just so good that I have to like him. A lot. It’s just as simple. Nightshade is more on the bad side, he is ancient, too, and cunning and he is playing a long game. And I am totally intrigued by him. I need to know more about is scheming, and about the mark and about his castle (or sort of)!
But there are also some minor characters and they were all good! Markus is by far my favorite, so I hope to see more of him around in the series, but they all were good. I think that’s all, and what could you ask more??? Yes, it’s not perfect but who cares!! I am so looking forward to its sequels!!

So, it’s quite clear I loved this book! But what about you? Have you read this one? Or do you have it on your TBR? Let me know!

Happy reading!
