Kate Daniels – series by Ilona Andrews

Hello world! How are you? If I am lucky I would be on vacation at this moment, happy and relaxed, and really satisfied with my self for scheduling some blog post. How great is that?? Anyway, at last, I am here to talk about some Urban Fantasy. Yep, behold your racing heart, the moment has arrived!

So, today I am finally here to talk to you about one of my favorite UF series ever, yay! This one was not my first UF series, but was one of the first and I loved it from the start to the end, for a lot of good reasons, so, ladies and gentlemen, I am happy to present…

Kate Daniels’ series!

The world has suffered a magic apocalypse. We pushed the technological progress too far, and now magic returned with a vengeance. It comes in waves, without warning, and vanishes as suddenly as it appears. When magic is up, planes drop out of the sky, cars stall, electricity dies. When magic is down, guns work and spells fail.

It’s a volatile, screwed-up world. Magic feeds on technology, gnawing down on skyscrapers until most of them topple and fall, leaving only skeletal husks behind. Monsters prowl the ruined streets, werebears and werehyenas stalk their prey; and the Masters of the Dead, necromancers driven by their thirst of knowledge and wealth, pilot blood-crazed vampires with their minds.

In this world lives Kate Daniels. Kate likes her sword a little too much and has a hard time controlling her mouth. The magic in her blood makes her a target, and she spent most of her life hiding in plain sight.  But sometimes even trained killers make friends and fall in love, and when the universe tries to kick them in the face, they kick back.
(from the official site of the author)

The series is written by Ilona Andrews (pseudonymous for a married couple of writers) and it has 10 books, some short novellas, some extra scenes, and a companion series, that has just started this year (Hugh, don’t disappoint me!).

The worldbuilding is an interesting one, new and original. I loved the idea of this world. And yes, I may be biased, but we have wereanimals, vampires (a new, different kind of), magical creatures, knights, Gods, druids, witches and even something else. We may or may not have dragons, too. Or Angel of Death. But those are just rumors!
And I loved the alternation of magic and technology that we have here, the waves are an original touch.

And we have a ton of action! All the books are fast-paced, with action, mysteries, plot, some twists here and there, magic, battles, and all that you can ask, with a good dose of hilariousness here and there. Some dialogues would make you laugh out loud, believe me!

“It took a qualified wizard to detect a summoning in progress. It required only a half-literate idiot with a twitch of power and a dim idea of how to use it to attempt one. Before you knew it, a three-headed Slavonic god was wreaking havoc in downtown Atlanta, the skies were raining winged snakes, and SWAT was screaming for more ammo.”

But the best thing with this series is the characters! They are amazing! Kate is one of a kind, that’s for sure. Diplomacy it’s not her thing, but she’s a warrior, pragmatic, deathly, but with a ton of compassion and humanity. And she has a witty remark for everything. And I mean it!

“Eleven out of twelve work fine. I’d say that’s better chances than getting an orgasm with a blind date and women still try.” He blinked and laughed softly. “I never know what you’ll say next.” “I don’t either.”

And next to her we have Curran, the Beast Lord. He’s… amazing! He’s stubborn, strong, he’s a warrior, too, and the Head of the Pack, the one who “rule” them all. But he’s also kind of sweet and… fun! I love him and Kate together. I think that they are one of the best couples ever!!!!

“Diplomacy was never my strong suit and my patience had run dry. I crouched and called out, “Here, kitty, kitty, kitty.” […]
“Kitty, kitty?” asked a level male voice.[…]
“What kind of woman greets the Beast Lord with ‘here, kitty, kitty’?” he asked.
“One of a kind”. I murmered the obvious reply.”

But they were not alone. We have a lot of other great characters! Gashtek (I hope to have written that name right!), Derek (a little piece of my heart is his), Hugh (and his! Even if we may have a sort of complicated relationship going on), Ascanio, Andrea, Dali, George, Barabas (he’s fantastic too), Roman, and all the others!
And in these books we met them, we became their friends, and we rejoice with them, we suffer alongside them all, and we grow together. It’s really a marvelous thing when you can call so many characters “your friends” because coming the last book in the series you would truly know them.
And reading the last book was amazing and the saddest thing ever. It was a bittersweet reading because you need to read it and you are craving your fixing, but you know that this would be the last time you would meet them. And that really hurts. But, to me, it’s the sign that this series really meant a lot, to me, and I hope it would win over (or conquer) a ton of readers out there!

Oh boy oh boy I’m so glad you did a series overview for this! I love this cast and it’s gonna be hard to say goodbye to them! I haven’t read a long UF series in a while, but I quite liked Chuck Wendig’s Miriam Black series. Oh, and I highly, highly, HIGHLY recommend The Last Sun by K.D. Edwards, which is a new series that just came out this year. 😀

Love this series! I’ve only read all the main books, but they’re all such great books. I loved the way the authors managed to keep things interesting for the readers. Longer running UF do tend to suffer sometimes because the story flounders after a few books, but this one never did!
