Title: Reign of Mist
Series: Oremere Chronicles #2
Author: Helen Scheuerer
Expected date publication: September 13th, 2018

The realm’s darkest secret is out.
The cruelty of the capital and the power-hungry King Arden have scattered Bleak and her companions across the continents.
On the run in a foreign land, Bleak finds herself tied to some unexpected strangers. When the answers she yearns for are finally within reach, she must face the hard truths of her past, and take her fate into her own hands before it’s too late.
Meanwhile, secrets and magic unravel as a dark power corrupts the realm. Bleak’s friends are forced to decide where their loyalties lie, and who, if anyone, they can trust.
But one thing is certain: war is coming, and they must all be ready when it does.

Intriguing and action-packed, Reign of Mist is the second instalment in Helen Scheuerer’s epic YA fantasy series, The Oremere Chronicles.

Helen is also the Founding Editor of Writer’s Edit (www.writersedit.com), an online learning platform for emerging writers. In its first year, Writer’s Edit reached thousands of new authors, and soon became its own small press, with Helen overseeing the production and publication of three creative writing anthologies, Kindling Volume I, Volume II and Volume III. Helen’s love of writing and books led her to pursue a Bachelor of Creative Arts, majoring in Creative Writing at the University of Wollongong. While the Kindling books were being published, Helen also completed a Masters of Publishing at the University of Sydney.
Helen now lives by the beach and writes full time. She has many more books planned for the future.

The Review

This post is a long one even without my review so I would try to stay on track and be short and meaningful about it! Or at least… I really hope to be so but I know that this would be a mission impossible!

Anyway… in this book I found a lot of the things that I liked in the first installment of this series: Bleak is a unique main character, and even if her plot twist is a little foreseeable, I really liked her arc and her as a person. Fiore, he is great and keeps on being great, so no big surprise here! And the descriptions are even more loveable. In the first book I loved the lush Valian forest and in this second book, we have more new settings with which fall in love! And the story is intriguing and fast-paced, full of intrigues and action! Yes, to be honest, the pace is not always… homogeneous, but it’s a minor thing.

And I found a lot of new things to love here! In the first book I liked and disliked Henri, and Swinton was not one of my favorites, but now I think I like Henri and I am starting to like a little bit even Swinton. We see more of Olena and Dash, and I loved them! They are two sweet characters and even if they are not major in the story development they are well characterized and are real. I liked Casimir, too (and I am not sure I write this name right but I take some notes while reading and… I have somewhat misplaced them, so I’m sorry about this!!!), he’s an intense character and I think he would be more active on the third book, or at least, I hope so!
All those things are great, really, and I appreciated them to no end, but the best thing in this book, the one that really made my day while I was reading is… Rion! I may have a penchant for animals, but I loved him!!! And the dogs, but more Rion and the other panthers. Amazing!

The author creates great female characters, all of them are strong, not in the same ways, and they’re outside the cliche zone, for the most part, and this is a thing that I appreciated a lot. But the male ones are great in the same way, to be just. And the places she describes are so wonderful, so lush, so full of life and magic that you would feel the need to go and immerse yourself in nature for a bit. I loved that!

So… that’s all for today, people! But I would be back with another post for this blog tour. There are a lot of interesting things in this series and I want to talk a little bit more about them all!

Did you read this book? Or have you heard about it? Let me know!

Happy reading!
S.
